OFWs living in Tokyo who need to secure an Affidavits of Support & Guarantee (ASG) can schedule an appointment at the Philippine Embassy, located at 5-15-5 Roppongi Minato, Tokyo 106-8537 Japan. The ASG is a notarized document required by the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines for Filipinos who are who wish to visit Japan as tourists. It is the obligation of the OFW (sponsor) to process and submit the ASG to the Embassy.

Qualifications

Filipinos in Japan with first and second degrees of consanguinity or affinity may sign and apply for an Affidavit of Support & Guarantee to sponsor a relative.

Requirements

All documents should be prepared on A4-sized paper, including one (1) original and one (1) photocopy.

The requirements for ASG are as follows:

  • Sponsor’s valid passport or ID
  • Note: Please include an English translation of any Japanese driver’s license or My Number Card if the applicant plans to present as ID.

  • Sponsor’s proof of financial capability (pay slip, bank statements, certificates, etc.)
  • Two (2) unbiased witnesses with valid IDs
  • One (1) ¥520 Japan Post Letter pack that is self-addressed

Step 10: Complete and compile the needed documents.

Step 11: Visit the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, Japan at the time and date scheduled. Bring a printed copy of your appointment date and both the original and a photocopy of the required documentation.

Step 12: Go to the Notarial window and submit documents for assessment.

Step 13: After assessing your submitted documents, the Embassy personnel will call you for your signature.

Step 14: Sign the documents in front of the Embassy personnel. The two (2) witnesses you bring should also sign on the document/s for notarization.

Step 15: The Embassy personnel will review your documents.

Step 16: You will be asked by Embassy personnel to pick between Regular and Express document release via mail.

  • Documents that have been processed regularly will be mailed to your address in Japan within three (3) business days of the filing date.
  • Documents that have been processed fast/express are mailed on the next business day.

Step 17: Proceed to the cashier to pay fees.

  • Each document’s notarization costs ¥3,500.
  • There is an additional fee of ¥1,400 per document if express service is requested.

Step 18: Save a copy of your transaction slip (the white paper with the information on when your document will be released) and your official receipt.

Step 19: Wait until your ASG is released.

Important Reminders

  • On the day of filing, the signatory must sign the document or documents for notarization in front of the Embassy personnel.
  • Applicants must provide valid proof of identification (ID), such as a driver’s license, passport, or residence card issued by the Japanese government.
  • For a document to be notarized, the applicant’s true legal name must match the name on their valid ID. The applicant’s signature on the notarial document must match the signature on their passport and any other valid government-issued ID.
  • Embassy personnel are forbidden to testify as witnesses when the applicant is signing the ASG documents.
  • The Philippine Embassy will continue to provide Certificates of Acknowledgment or Jurats with a gold seal and an eyelet, but it will no longer affix a red satin ribbon to its notarized documents.
