A Closer Look at the Philippine Heart Center

The Philippine Heart Center is a government corporation established to serve as the prime hospital for cardiovascular health care in the Philippines. For four decades, it has established itself not only as a reputable heart center, but also as one of the busiest Congenital Heart Surgery centers in the South Pacific Islands to the Middle East, the Philippines, and the Asia-Pacific regions.

True to its mandate, the Heart Center has dedicated over four decades to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and provisions for comprehensive patient care, education and training, research, and public information. It also boasts of the best and most efficient medical services, powered by well-trained and highly-experienced manpower (including physicians and other medical personnel) as well as the latest technology and procedures in cardiovascular science.

History

The Philippine Heart Center was launched by virtue of the Presidential Decree No. 673 issued by president Ferdinand E. Marcos in February 1975. It was housed in what was referred to as the Marcoses’ “edifice complex,” as part of the Marcoses’ “hallmark of greatness.” The PHC hospital was built using 50% of that year’s national health budget, which resulted in criticisms because as Senator Jose W. Diokno said, “Filipinos were dying of curable illnesses like TB [tuberculosis], whooping cough, and dysentery” in other places in the country.

The Philippine Heart Center did not actually start as such. Prior to 1975, it was known as the Philippine Heart Center for Asia and was originally headed by Avenilo P. Aventura (1974-1986)—a well-known cardiovascular surgeon who performed many pioneering operations in the Philippines including the first successful renal transplantation in 1970, and the first CABG in 1972. He also developed and implanted the first ASEAN bioprosthesis, the PHCA porcine valve.

By 2014, the Philippine Heart Center has becomeso well-known that it received a Qmentum International Gold Accreditation for August 2014 – 2017 by Accreditation Canada International for its “excellence in hospital practices and safety.
