What is Junior Level Science Scholarship?

The Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program’s principal purpose is to provide financial support to brilliant and deserving students in their third year of college, particularly those pursuing scientific and technology degrees. In this way, the program strives to ensure a stable and sufficient pool of talented scientific and technology experts who will contribute to the advancement and development of the country. The scholarship program aims to alleviate the financial constraints of talented and deserving students pursuing higher education, ensuring they have the necessary resources to excel academically and achieve their goals.

Republic Act No. 10612 aims to enhance the country’s science and technology education by expediting the graduation of students in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering, who will then go on to teach science and mathematics in secondary schools nationwide.

The Regular Academic Year offers a comprehensive scholarship package for private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) students. The scholarship covers ₱40,000.00 per year for tuition and other school fees. Additionally, students receive ₱10,000.00 annually for learning materials and/or connectivity allowance, facilitating their access to necessary resources.

To support scholars in their daily living expenses, a monthly allowance of ₱7,000.00 is provided. A transportation allowance is granted for students studying outside their home province, including an economy-class roundtrip fare. To ensure their well-being, scholars are also covered by Group Health and Accident Insurance. Moreover, the program allocates ₱10,000.00 as a thesis allowance, aiding students in their research work. Upon successful completion of their studies, a graduation allowance of ₱1,000.00 is given to acknowledge their accomplishment.

During the Summer term, if required in the curriculum, further support is provided with a tuition and other school fees allowance amounting to ₱10,000.00. Students also receive an outright grant of ₱2,000.00 for learning materials and/or connectivity allowance, enabling them to prepare for their summer courses effectively. The monthly living allowance during this period remains ₱7,000.00 for two months, helping students focus on their studies without financial burdens.

Qualifications

The criteria of eligibility for the MERIT, RA 10612 and RA 7687 are as follows:

  • Natural-born Filipino citizen.
  • Must be of good moral character and in good health.
  • Must be a regular second-year college male and female student enrolled in a DOST-SEI priority S&T course at identified universities in the Second Semester of AY 2022-2023.
  • Must have a general weighted average of at least 83% or its equivalent and with no conditional or failing mark from the First Semester of First Year until the First Semester of Second Year in college, including in the midyear terms, if enrolled.
  • Have not applied for a DOST-SEI scholarship before; or have applied for a DOST-SEI scholarship before but did not qualify for the scholarship; or have qualified for a DOST-SEI scholarship but did not avail of the award.
  • Poor, talented, and deserving student who belongs to a family whose socioeconomic status does not exceed the set values of certain indicators. (RA7687 only)
  • Resident of the municipality as attested by the barangay for at least four (4) years. (RA7687 only)

  • Readable copy of Birth Certificate. May be issued by the PSA, NSO or the Municipal Registry Office
